World Learning and the World Affairs Council in Seattle are partnering to recruit host families for 10 Brazilian teenagers between the ages of 15 and 18 from January 11— 23, 2012. The students, who speak English fluently, have been selected by the U.S. Embassy in Brazil from a pool of thousands to become ambassadors for their country. Host families must have a

teenage child in the household who attends Roosevelt High School. Get a host family application from Mrs. Magidman in room 239.

Girls Swimming Congratulations to the girls for placing 3rd at the District meet. State qualifiers include Johanna Brunner, Cassie Tallman, Maddie Maider, Hannah Benson, Hannah Rosen and Annie Galloway.

Driver’s Education If you are interested in taking the after-school driver training class that starts at Roosevelt on November 16, call the Traffic Education office at 252-4735 for information.

Homework Center Will be closed on Wednesday, November 9th for a staff meeting.

RHS GIRLS BASKETBALL TRYOUTS

Tryouts for the girls basketball teams start on Monday 11/14, at 3:00 PM in the gym. All paperwork and fees must be turned in – in order to try out.

Wrestling Team (http://www.rhsseattle.org/athletics.php#practice), Wrestling begins Nov. 15 – turn in all paperwork and pay to play before you start! JM

Boys Soccer All interested new and returning boys soccer players – Meeting on Thursday, November 10th at 2:45 in Rm. 307 – Come by if interested.

Fall Sports Awards Night Awards night will be held on November 15th in the theater. Come help recognize the effort and successful seasons of Roosevelt student-athletes. Look for team-specific announcements about team mtgs. Before or after the all-team Awards.

The Upward Bound program is looking for a student to be a math tutor. UB meets at RHS every Monday and Wednesday from 2:30 to 4:30 in computer lab 340. You could come once or twice a week. If interested contact Mr. Jackland in room 247 anytime, or go to UB in 340 on Monday or Wednesday at 2:30 and meet Ms. Williams, the UB representative. RJ

IT’S NEW AND IT’S ON THE SHELF – Stitches: a Memoir by David Small. A graphic novel that chronicles the life of American author and illustrator David Small, detailing his sickly childhood and teenage years, relationship with his parents, his cancer, and more.

YOU DON’T NEED TO TAKE AN AP LITERATURE CLASS TO TAKE THE AP LITERATURE TEST – But it might help if you read this book, Medea and Electra by Euripides. Presents study tools on Euripides' "Medea" and "Electra," including background on the plays and author and section-by-section character lists, summaries, analyses, study questions and answers, and essay topic suggestions.

A STRENUOUS LIFE 1944 – A picture of the front of Roosevelt High School includes a prominent sign, “WAR AID CENTER”. The Boy’s Club Cabinet picture included the famous “Big Stick”. The annual Father-Son banquet was cancelled because of a wartime shortage of food and help. In March, the long awaited phone system was installed.

NATIONAL GAMING DAY CELEBRATED SATURDAY AT NORTHEAST BRANCH OF SEATTLE PUBLIC LIBRARY – November 12, 2011, 2-5pm, ages 8-18. Table games, video games and an in-library scavenger hunt. Prizes for scavenger hunt and best sleuth costume.
