Expand Your Horizons: Host a student! Go to Serbia! Roosevelt High School and the World Affairs Council in Seattle are teaming up to find host families for a group of 10 students and 2 youth leaders from Serbia. This cadre is focusing on Ethnic Tolerance in a Multi-Ethnic Society and will be visiting Roosevelt High School to experience American high school life as well as make new friends and exchange ideas. The World Affairs Council is looking for host families for the students and the 2 youth leaders from October 27 – November 13 at Roosevelt High School. The students are in high school and are between the ages of 15 – 17. The youth leaders vary in age, but are over the age of 20. There are monetary compensation stipends for host families based on need ONLY. This is an incredible opportunity for cultural exchange and enrichment for you and your family. There is also a USA/Serbia exchange piece to this program. American students and youth leaders will be invited to participate in a week and half long exchange program in Serbia to reconnect with their Serbian counterparts in March 2008. There are 2 fully funded scholarship placements for American high school students traveling to Serbia as well! Feel free to pass this on to your friends, neighbors and colleagues as well as we are still looking for host families! RHS Photography Programs Needs old Cameras: Have you switched to a digital camera? Is your old point and shoot camera sitting around gathering dust? If so, consider donating it to the Roosevelt Photography program. The Photography program (a/k/a Graphic Arts) is in desperate need of 35 mm cameras in working condition, for students to borrow who do not have the financial resources to buy a camera of their own. Point and shoot is fine, as long as it takes film (since learning to develop film is an integral part of the class). We want all students to be able to take photography, regardless of economic circumstances. You can get a tax letter for your donation (not to mention good karma). Bring your donations to Cecilia Otto, Room #251 or email cbotto@seattleschools.org

Request from the Editor, Sue Wong: It is important when you reply to requests in the articles below, that you read through the email in case the contact person is NOT me. Also, I am now doing the Eckstein Daily Bulletins. So, if you are submitting any articles to me it is important that you put “RHS” somewhere in the subject line. Thank you. Sue Wong

Do You Have A Graduate of 2007 or know of one? 2007 Graduates may pick up their diplomas in the Main Office.

Immunization News from the RHS Nurse: Washington State law requires ALL students to be immunized against certain diseases, a certain number of times, in a specific sequence in order to attend school. If your high school student has not had the following immunizations they may be prevented from remaining at Roosevelt until it can be proven that they are indeed current. Those students who are not in compliance with the state law should have received notification from District Health Services this summer as to what immunizations were incomplete and were to have attended to addressing this deficit, and informing Health Services of the new/additional dates.

· 2 MMR (Measles) with the first ON or AFTER the 1st birthday, the second anytime after 30 days but usually given by the 6th grade.

RHS Professional Development (PD) Calendar for 2007-08: Roosevelt is now into its fourth year of a modified Professional Development (PD) schedule. There is no longer a Small Learning Community grant, but the cohort of Seattle high schools is continuing its support of the Professional Development calendar. This coming Fall we will continue with the Late Arrival (rather than Early Dismissal) for our extra RHS-specific Professional Development days. However, in reviewing this past year’s PD schedule, the committee made changes in an effort to address some concerns parents, students, as well as staff and reduced the number of late-arrival days from 17 to 12. Roosevelt will continue with its back-to-back PD days which will allow for more quality and in-depth instruction for students and allow for continuity in the staff training and development. The instructional time on the RHS PD 2.25-Hour late-arrival days will continue to contain only three, 50 minute periods each day. These 13 additional RHS-specific late arrival days is in addition to the Districts five early dismissal days and two full-days of Professional Development.
