“NEW” NEWS
Thank you to all the parents and staff who helped make the RHS Homecoming Dance
such a success!
NEW… Welcome RHS Parents/Guardians to the Next RHS PTSA Board/General Meeting on OCTOBER 17th, 7:00 p.m. in the RHS Library. All welcome.
NEW… Parents/Guardians of Seniors, Monday October 22 in the RHS Commons, 7:00-8:30 p.m.: Yes, we are now Senior parents, but it is just our kids who are four years older! We are having an informal informational evening about what to expect this year at RHS. Members of several senior committees will speak on their event to give parents an idea of costs and expectations. We are asking that you bring a small amount of dessert and/or juice to share. The rest of the evening can be spent talking with old friends (remember preschool?) or getting ideas from those parents who have been through this before. Don’t forget that the first due date for Grad Ads is October 29 (with free proofs). Download forms from www.rhs.seattleschools.org, click on Forms.
NEW… Volunteer Opportunities: Please join the hundreds of parents and guardians who keep RHS running by volunteering. There are one-time-only opportunities, event opportunities and opportunities to commit on an on-going basis. Fill out the attached sign-up sheet and either return it electronically to rhsvolunteers@hotmail.com or leave a hard copy in the front office PTSA mail box. Questions? Email Christine Garrigan at rhsvolunteers@hotmail.com. Thank you! (Just a note from Sue Wong – To save on paper, we deliberately did not print off 1700 copies of volunteer forms to include in the First Week PTSA packets. Instead we opted to put the form online. Do not prove us wrong and make us go back to providing hardcopies to all of you. Too busy to go to the RHS website, click on the link http://home.comcast.net/~writehan/ptsa-volunteer-form.pdf )
NEW… Roosevelt Jazz Band at the Triple Door: The Roosevelt Jazz Band is excited to be opening this year’s Earshot Jazz Festival with a performance at the Triple Door on Friday, October 19 at 7:00 (for all ages) and 9:30 p.m. (for ages 21 and over). NEW… Are you Under Age 16 and Did You Submit a Military Opt Out Notice? If you are under the age of 16, and submitted a Military Opt Out Notice on the District Form, your wish to opt out of having your identifying information released to the military may not be implemented. You are not legally able to opt out without parent signature until you are 16 years old. Check with your parents or with our registrar in room 101C to see if your parents submitted the FERPA opt out form that was in the "first day packets" on your behalf. If not, you will want to make sure they do so--the form is available on the District website, www.seattleschools.org, and needs to be turned in to our registrar BEFORE 10/19/07. We apologize for any confusion and inconvenience caused by the lack of accurate information about the age limit on the District form. See Ms. Krakauer in the counseling office if you have any questions.
NEW… Senior Ladies, Are you Applying to Mills College? Senior ladies, if you are planning to apply to Mills College, a small, women's' liberal arts college in the Bay Area, I have one admission application fee waiver, which I will give to the first student who comes to see me and can convince me you are serious about applying to the college. So drop by to see Wendy Krakauer in the Counseling Office if you fit that category.

The RHS website calendar includes a variety of student and family events and information including late arrival, early dismissal, holidays and vacations, PTSA meetings, college testing dates, arts events including concerts, plays and other performances, various RHS booster meetings, school-wide form turn in deadlines, and more. If you're looking for sports information, the League Minder calendar link at the top of the School Year calendar will give you access to all the details you need about RHS sports. Expand Your Horizons: Host a student! Go to Serbia! Roosevelt High School and the World Affairs Council in Seattle are teaming up to find host families for a group of 10 students and 2 youth leaders from Serbia. This cadre is focusing on Ethnic Tolerance in a Multi-Ethnic Society and will be visiting Roosevelt High School to experience American high school life as well as make new friends and exchange ideas. The World Affairs Council is looking for host families for the students and the 2 youth leaders from October 27 – November 13 at Roosevelt High School. The students are in high school and are between the ages of 15 – 17. The youth leaders vary in age, but are over the age of 20. There are monetary compensation stipends for host families based on need ONLY. This is an incredible opportunity for cultural exchange and enrichment for you and your family. There is also a USA/Serbia exchange piece to this program. American students and youth leaders will be invited to participate in a week and half long exchange program in Serbia to reconnect with their Serbian counterparts in March 2008. There are 2 fully funded scholarship placements for American high school students traveling to Serbia as well! Feel free to pass this on to your friends, neighbors and colleagues as well as we are still looking for host families! Please contact Chrissy Hyde, Deputy Director, International Visitor Program, World Affairs Council – Seattle at (206) 441-5910 or chyde@world-affairs.org, with any additional questions.
RHS Photography Programs Needs old Cameras: Have you switched to a digital camera? Is your old point and shoot camera sitting around gathering dust? If so, consider donating it to the Roosevelt Photography program. The Photography program (a/k/a Graphic Arts) is in desperate need of 35 mm cameras in working condition, for students to borrow who do not have the financial resources to buy a camera of their own. Point and shoot is fine, as long as it takes film (since learning to develop film is an integral part of the class). We want all students to be able to take photography, regardless of economic circumstances. You can get a tax letter for your donation (not to mention good karma). Bring your donations to Cecilia Otto, Room #251 or email cbotto@seattleschools.org
Immunization News from the RHS Nurse: Washington State law requires ALL students to be immunized against certain diseases, a certain number of times, in a specific sequence in order to attend school. If your high school student has not had the following immunizations they may be prevented from remaining at Roosevelt until it can be proven that they are indeed current. Those students who are not in compliance with the state law should have received notification from District Health Services this summer as to what immunizations were incomplete and were to have attended to addressing this deficit, and informing Health Services of the new/additional dates.
· 4 DPT/TD with the last one ON or AFTER the 4th birthday. A booster should be given every 10 years but this is not required for school attendance though recommended.
· 3 Polio (OPV or IPV--only IPV is given now) with the last one ON or AFTER the 4th birthday.
· 2 MMR (Measles) with the first ON or AFTER the 1st birthday, the second anytime after 30 days but usually given by the 6th grade.
· 3 Hepatitis B vaccines--the series is usually completed within 6 months.

RHS Professional Development (PD) Calendar for 2007-08: Roosevelt is now into its fourth year of a modified Professional Development (PD) schedule. There is no longer a Small Learning Community grant, but the cohort of Seattle high schools is continuing its support of the Professional Development calendar. This coming Fall we will continue with the Late Arrival (rather than Early Dismissal) for our extra RHS-specific Professional Development days. However, in reviewing this past year’s PD schedule, the committee made changes in an effort to address some concerns parents, students, as well as staff and reduced the number of late-arrival days from 17 to 12. Roosevelt will continue with its back-to-back PD days which will allow for more quality and in-depth instruction for students and allow for continuity in the staff training and development. The instructional time on the RHS PD 2.25-Hour late-arrival days will continue to contain only three, 50 minute periods each day. These 13 additional RHS-specific late arrival days is in addition to the Districts five early dismissal days and two full-days of Professional Development.
