RE: RHS PTSA Parent Email Bulletin – November 3, 2007

“NEW” NEWS

NEW… Parent Education Night – Teens and Electronic Addiction: Thursday, November 8th at 7:00 p.m. in the RHS Library. With RHS parent and therapist Matthew Gittleman.

NEW… Calling All Class of 2010 Parents and Guardians: Parents and guardians of the class of 2010 students, please join us for our fall get together on Tuesday, November 13th from 7:00 PM - 8:30 PM in the RHS Commons. Learn all about the class of 2010 graduation fund raising goals and events. The funds we raise during the next three years will help offset the costs of the many graduation events ensuring that all RHS students in the class of 2010 can participate.

Find out about the many opportunities for families to get involved and the events the class of 2010 host: Winter Ball in December 2007, Tolo in February 2009, Graduation events in 2010 (Senior Spree, Senior Lunch, Senior Prom and Graduation). Two additional fund raising activities have been planned that will occur in '08, '09 and '10 to help the class reach its fund-raising goal --- a direct donation campaign encouraging families to make a contribution to the class of 2010 each year and a fun parent dinner party/mini-auction each spring. We're looking forward to meeting with you!

NEW… Volunteer or team needed to lead the “No-Bake Bake Sale” all school fundraising campaign. An individual or team is needed by the PTSA board to lead this annual fundraiser. The No-Bake Bake Sale is our only opportunity to generate funding for teaching positions at RHS. Money raised benefits the entire student body at RHS. The No-Bake Bake Sale largely can be done from home so it is an ideal volunteer opportunity for those with daytime commitments. Preparation for the campaign kicks off by early December, is busiest in January, and complete by early March. The previous campaign leader, although no longer at Roosevelt, will be available to provide guidance to the new team. This is a direct appeal for donations—there is nothing to sell. Please consider donating your time to this very important project. For more information contact Christine Garrigan, garriganchristine@yahoo.com.

Washington Aerospace Scholars offers learning opportunity. The Washington Aerospace Scholars (WAS) program is currently accepting applications from high school juniors from across Washington state. The goal of the WAS is to increase the number of Washington state students who choose to major in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. WAS provides students opportunities to study a NASA-designed curriculum, work with professional engineers and scientists, visit engineering facilities, and compete in hands-on engineering challenges. From January to May, accepted students will complete a series of web-based lessons centering on the history and future of space exploration. In June or July, select students will be invited to Seattle for a 6-day residential workshop hosted by the Museum of Flight. During the workshop, students will design a human mission to Mars under the guidance of professional scientists and engineers. There is no cost for participation in the WAS. Are you Under Age 16 and Did You Submit a Military Opt Out Notice? If you are under the age of 16, and submitted a Military Opt Out Notice on the District Form, your wish to opt out of having your identifying information released to the military may not be implemented. You are not legally able to opt out without parent signature until you are 16 years old. Check with your parents or with our registrar in room 101C to see if your parents submitted the FERPA opt out form that was in the "first day packets" on your behalf. If not, you will want to make sure they do so--the form is available on the District website, www.seattleschools.org, and needs to be turned in to our registrar BEFORE 10/19/07. We apologize for any confusion and inconvenience caused by the lack of accurate information about the age limit on the District form. See Ms. Krakauer in the counseling office if you have any questions.

Other Old News

Speeding Cars Around RHS in the Mornings: Remind your students of the speed limit around RHS (or any school for that matter). It has been reported that high schoolers are speeding down 16th/17th/18th Avenues between NE 77th and 75th in the mornings between 7:15 and 7:30. Violators, if caught, will be prosecuted and the neighborhood and the police are now aware of the problem. Also remind students that with the coming frosty mornings and low temperatures, it makes driving even more treacherous. Students need to be reminded that that while this area may be somewhere they are passing thru to get to school, it's a neighborhood for others. Also, if they get ticketed for speeding, their (and parents) insurance rates are likely to go up.

WHEN DO WINTER SPORTS START? – Girl’s and Boy’s Basketball, Boy’s Swimming, and Wrestling start November 12th. Gymnastics starts November 5th. It is time to make sure you have your athletic paperwork turned in. If you played a fall sport, you only need to turn in a new yellow card, otherwise pick up an athletic packet in the Main Office. Be sure you have purchased your activity card, paid any outstanding fines, and paid your athletic fees.

RHS Fall Staff Appreciation Luncheon will be held on Friday, November 16th. Show our appreciation for the wonderful staff at RHS!!! It will be in the staff lounge just above The Commons beginning at 10:45 with first lunch. Please have your food delivered to the staff lounge no later than 10AM that day, as it takes a while to get everything set up. We’d like to have hardy soups, salads and sandwiches for the staff. I have put a list of the categories below (I’ll get all the fixings for the sandwiches, the water, plates, soup cups, etc.).

Hardy Soups – would like 10 people to each bring quantity to feed 20 (I’m just doing cups, not big bowls…..). Please bring a ladle to serve your soup, and label it well.

Large salads – 20 people bring your favorite fall salad

Please be sure to label your serving pieces!!!! We’ll give a good rinse to your dishes, and keep them in the staff lounge instead of crowding the main office with them. Please come back later that afternoon (around 12:20/1:00) to pick your things up from the lounge. Let me know what you can bring. If you aren’t going to be here that day, but want to contribute something, you can bring it to my home the day before. I will also plan on being at the school by 8:30 that morning to receive your items. Soups should arrive hot, as I don’t know about re-heating ability in the staff lounge. We may or may not have access to outlets in the food sciences room next door. Thanks, everyone! Julene Davidson (davidsonrj@comcast.net) and Barbara Hack (barbarahack@comcast.net
