BROADWAY’S MUSICAL PRODUCTION CATS COMES TO ROOSEVELT!

On May 21, 22, 28, 29, 30, 31 the talented Roosevelt High School Drama and Music programs will be presenting exciting performances of the razzle-dazzle Broadway musical, CATS.

Based on the universally popular poetry of T.S. Eliot, CATS tells the story, in song and dance, of the annual gathering of Jellicle cats at which time one special cat is selected to ascend to the Heaviside layer. A true musical theatre phenomenon, Cats has conquered the world with a score which includes the hit song "Memory".

Tickets go on sale May 1st, both on-line at www.rooseveltdrama.org and thru the Box Office.

Adults/$15, Students and Seniors/$12.

SCHOLARSHIP MONEY FOR PROM TICKETS HAS BEEN USED UP

Students can still turn in prom scholarship applications to Wendy Krakauer, to be on a “wait list”. Students, if you turned in a prom scholarship application previously, but have not yet picked up your scholarship coupon, please do so ASAP. Coupons not picked up will be given instead to students on the “wait list”. Note: there is still some scholarship money left for Spree tickets.

SCIENCE IN SOCIETY TALK

Roosevelt Science Boosters present a “Science in Society” evening talk by Associate Professor Yoky Matsuoka from the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, University of Washington.

Date and time: May 6 at 7.30 pm, at Roosevelt HS (the talk will either be in the theatre or library; more details will follow)

Her talk is entitled “Robots, Brain, and Body". Dr. Matsuoka directs the Neurobotics Laboratory where robotic models and environments are used to understand the biomechanics and neuromuscular control of human limbs. In parallel, robotic systems are developed to augment, replace and rehabilitate damaged sensorimotor functions. All Roosevelt parents and students are welcome to attend this lecture. Students should check with their science teachers about receiving extra credit for attending this lecture. Refreshments will be served.

TECHNOLOGY BOOSTER MEETING, MAY 6TH

Do you have a student in Mr. Ruff's classes? Do you work in the Engineering/Technology industries? Only one hour of your time at our boosters meeting can really help with our tech program at RHS. Please join us in Mr. Ruff's room 217 on Wednesday May 6th 7-8pm. We are working on Field Trips to the Univ. of Washington and mentors for our RHS students. Everyone is welcome!

MAY 4 - 8 IS NATIONAL TEACHER APPRECIATION WEEK

Show your appreciation for all the hard work of the teachers & staff by sending in a card or a special treat for one or all of your child's teachers any day of that week!

CAMP SPANGLISH

Have a GREAT international experience right here at home! The Global Village Summer Camp at the University of Washington announces “Camp Spanglish” from July 1 to 21.

20 Spanish and 20 American High School students, living in dorms on the UW Campus, studying Englsih and Spanish in the mornings and spending afternoons, evenings and weekends doing activities and excursions together, such as volleyball, canoeing, hiking, soccer, tennis and more! This camp is an opportunity not only to learn language skills, but to practice them in a real living context. See our website for more details and application instructions:

RECOMMENDATIONS NEEDED FOR GOLDEN ACORN AWARD

Each year the Roosevelt PTSA gives Golden Acorn Awards to people who have given exemplary volunteer service to children and youth in our school community. The Golden Acorn Award is very special and is given for continued and dedicated service. This is an excellent way to honor PTSA members for their contributions.

We would like you to participate in the selection of our award recipient(s) through your recommendations. Please download a Golden Acorn Nomination Form, or pick one up in the Main Office, and return it by April 30, 2009, to Kari Monsen at john.kari@comcast.net, drop it off in the Main Office, or mail to 8705 25th Avenue NE, Seattle, WA 98115.

RHS PROM AND SPREE TICKET SALES REMINDER

Dear Class of 2009 Students and Parents/Guardians:

Reminder: Ticket sales for Prom and Spree have begun at lunchtime in the Commons. These are the upcoming dates—don’t miss out!

Prom, Sat., May 2 at The Columbia Tower Club, 5th & Columbia. $40per person

Invitations were handed out in homeroom classes Apr. 6.

Ticket Sales: Mon. through Fri., April 20-24; Mon.-Tues., Apr. 27-28.

PTSA-Sponsored Senior Party, “Spree,” Wed., June 10 following Graduation, $80per person (price goes up to $120 after May 22)

Ticket Sales and Bus Sign-ups: Mon. through Fri., April 20-24; Mon.-Tues., Apr. 27-28, Tues. through Thurs., May 12-14; May 19-21.

Note: signed parent/guardian permission form required for participation

SUMMER SCHOOL REGISTRATION FOR CREDIT RETRIEVAL OR FOR MISSING CORE ACADEMIC REQUIREMENTS

Do you need to make up credit in a core academic class you failed or do you need a core academic class for graduation that is not available to you at Roosevelt? Will you be in Seattle July 6--July 30, 8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Monday-Friday? If so, see your counselor so that you can get referred to summer school and find out about the registration process. High School Summer School sites are Roosevelt, West Seattle, Cleveland and Garfield (not all classes are available at all sites).

CLASS OF 2011 – JAMBA JUICE EXTRAVAGANZA

During the next few weeks pick up a Jamba Juice flier at school (ASR) and turn it in when you make a purchase – part of the proceeds will be donated to the Class of 2011 for their Prom and Spree events.

SENIORS, 60 HOURS OF SERVICE LEARNING MUST BE COMPLETED, DOCUMENTED AND TURNED IN BY 5/15/09

Members of the class of 2009, by 5/15 will you have completed 60 hours of service learning, documented your hours, and submitted the documentation to the counseling office? This is a graduation requirement that cannot be waived. If you have any questions about how many hours you still need to complete, if you will not have your 60 hours completed by 5/15 but do have a definite plan for getting the hours done prior to Senior checkout on 6/9, or if you have any other questions about service learning, see your counselor ASAP. ATTENTION ALL GOLFERS!

The RHS Foundation is hosting its 4th Annual Golf Tournament on Monday, May 4 at the Sand Point Country Club! This year, golfers will have the opportunity to choose between regulation play or "fun" play, i.e. scramble. The registration fee includes cost of your 18-hole game, a boxed lunch, dinner and 2 beverage tickets. Participants may also choose to forego golf, and join us for dinner and a short program followed by a Raise the Paddle fundraiser. So, grab a foursome and sign up today! And, pass the word to interested players and business owners you know who might like to be a hole sponsor or contribute to the Foundation's endowment.
