A Weekly Splash of RHS News. We highlight programs and activities of interest for families and guardians of Roosevelt High School students. The most time-sensitive news runs first, followed by general and previously posted items. Check www.rhsseattle.org for important articles received after this weekly post. Submission Rules. Please email your items (Only 125 words, max) to Tracy Romoser with the subject line “RHS PTSA Bulletin” by 5 p.m. the Friday prior to the week you want them published. Items run for two weeks.

Last weekend for the musical comedy “Curtains." Get your tickets now from the comfort of your own home. Tickets are on sale via the Internet at www.showtix4U.com to reserve your tickets. Show dates: June 3, 4, 5 and 6.

RHS Jazz events: There are lots of 'em! Tuesday, June 8 from 6 p.m. on: The Triple Door hosts Jazz Bands II and III, followed by Vocal Jazz and Jazz Band I at 8:30 p.m. You can make reservations at the Triple Door. Tickets are $15 per show $25 if you’d like to attend both shows. Monday, June 14 at 7:30 p.m.: Jazz Bands II, III and Vocal Jazz will be performing at their End-of-Year Jazz Concert on Monday in the Roosevelt HS Theatre. Admission is free. Friday, June 18 at 7:30 p.m.: Jazz Band I will perform their End-of-Year Jazz Band Concert in the Roosevelt Theatre. Admission is free.

Upcoming Roosevelt Vocal Jazz Ensemble Auditions. Auditions will be held on Wednesday, June 9 (12:45 - 2:30); Thursday, June 10 (2:45 - 3:30) and Friday, if necessary (2:45 - 3:30). There will be a signup sheet outside of the band room. Roosevelt students should signup for an audtion slot on the signup sheet outside of the band room or email Mr. Brown. Incoming 9th graders may email Mr. Brown at: slbrown@seattleschools.org. Auditions consist of: matching pitch with a strong, steady, mature sound; quickly learning a melody; improvising over blues changes. You are not required to prepare a song. Sound, accuracy, style and improvisation are the priorities.

RHS Athletic Boosters We will be hosting a “Get Involved With Your RHS Athletic Boosters!” night on Tuesday, June 8 from 6 – 7 p.m. in the Commons. Learn about the annual Sports Auction, how to be a parent rep for your sport(s), volunteer opportunities, program sponsorship and more! Questions? Contact Jeannie Ianelli.

A welcoming night for incoming 9th graders. June 9 at 6:30 p.m., RHS cordially invites all incoming 9th graders and their parents/guardians to come to the Roosevelt Theatre. There be a short program with Principal Vance, the counselors and support staff so new Rough Riders can put names to faces. You'll receive the Summer Reading Assignment and updated information about Service Learning (a link to each will be posted here after the event).

After the program, the Student Store will be open, with refreshments and Roosevelt clothing items. Visit with the athletic coaches, parent Athletic Boosters representatives, and representatives from clubs in the Commons to find out about RHS activities. Freshmen 101 Night, hosted by the RHS Athletic Boosters. The RHS Athletic Boosters need your help to kick off our first annual “Freshman 101 Night” on Wednesday, June 9 from 7 – 8 p.m. in the Commons. Each sport has a table; each table has a coach, parent rep and 2-3 student athletes (earn community service hours!). Our incoming students must feel welcome and have the info they need to participate in Rider Sports. The Marching Band and Cheer Squad will also be there! Questions? Contact Julene Davidson.

Spring Evening Book Seminar for LA and Human Geography - (Date Change) Wed. June 9. The book is "Mountains Beyond Mountains" by Tracy Kidder, about public health in Haiti through the story of Paul Farmer, founder of Partners in Health. The seminar will be held from 6:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. in Room 242. For more information, download the flyer.

Spring Fling is June 10!! Please join us at our annual Spring Fling Concert and Pizza Fundraiser. This is our last concert of the year and many of our seniors will play concertos. Before the concert, there will be a pizza fundraiser. Bring a potluck salad, pay $5/person, get pizza and beverages, and schmooze with other orchestra parents and fans. We will have the usual bake sale as well; so please bake and nobody will go home without eating some sweets! We are asking a donation of $10/person for the concert; $5 for students/seniors. Please join us for some great music and a hearty send-off to our talented seniors.

In addition to the concert, a representative from the Grammy Foundation will be on hand to present the Grammy Signature School Enterprise Award to the Roosevelt Music Department!

The GRAMMY Foundation® Signature Schools program, recognized the top 12 public schools across the country for outstanding commitment to their music education programs. Determined by a blue-ribbon panel of top music educators and professionals, schools are awarded grants for their music departments. This year Roosevelt High School was among six schools in the country to be named a GRAMMY Signature Schools Enterprise Award recipient. The Enterprise Award category recognizes efforts made by schools that are economically underserved that provide a creative strategy to resolve a department-wide need or challenge. In addition to this prestigious award, the GRAMMY Foundation will present a $5000 grant to the school.

Hoops, Hoops, Hoops! Don’t miss your chance to see the Rider Classic Basketball Tournament and how the Roosevelt Men’s Basketball team stacks up against next year’s prospects from 20 high school teams around the Northwest. It’s the “Rider Classic” basketball tournament June 11 -13 in the Ben Snowden Gym. Rider Classic Basketball Tournament June 11 – 13. Adults $5; Students $3. On a related note: The Roosevelt Men’s Basketball team is hosting a summer basketball day camp for Boys grades 4 through 9. Please pass the word to younger siblings, friends and neighbors who might be interested. It’s your chance to learn from RHS head coach Bart Brandenburg and players from the Roosevelt team. New AP Language and Composition course. As of next school year, Roosevelt will be offering a yearlong Advanced Placement course called Language and Composition. It will be paired with American Literature and take the place of our American Literature requirement, and will be required for graduation starting with the class of 2012. Like other LA options, the course will eventually combine 11th and 12th graders, and for this reason, next year’s Juniors can take it next year or the year after that.

Colleges have and will rescind admission if students wind up with awful, awful grades in core academic classes. Finish high school on a positive note, ready to start new adventures in the fall. Tell the kids to keep working hard through June 14. And STAY OUT OF TROUBLE!

Service learning opportunity at Seattle CC on June 12 Students, earn 4.5 hours of service learning, helping out at the College Bound Scholarship Event Settle Public Schools is helping to put on for students in grades 7-10 and their families. The Scholarship program is for low income students in 7th and 8th grade who might not otherwise have the opportunity to attend college. High School students are needed to help with set-up, direct people to the right rooms, answer questions and help with set up. You are needed 8 a.m.-12:30 p.m. on Saturday, June 12 at Seattle Community College. Your “pay” in addition to service learning hours, is a brightly colored “volunteer” tee-shirt.
