Hold Your Horses: Schedule Changes WON’T be Accepted During the First 3 Days of School. Patience Prudence … before requesting class changes, students need to attend all their scheduled classes during the first three days of school, 9/8, 9/9 and 9/10. Counselors will ONLY be fixing holes or mistakes during these first three days, (such as the wrong level of math or world language). Note: wanting a different elective or a different LA option is not a mistake. Students may come into the Counseling Office after school, 2:36 p.m., on Friday 9/10 to make schedule change appointments for 9/13-9/21.
September 21 is the last day for students to drop and add classes for the semester (District policy). We appreciate your cooperation and patience regarding schedule changes. We are trying hard to get kids into the classes they need and want, while minimizing classroom disruption as much as possible. Wendy Krakauer, Head Counselor, Roosevelt High School
Come Help with First Day Packets! You've all waded through those packets on the first day of school — a manila envelope filled with forms, school district info and details about many of the clubs at RHS. You've probably always wondered how those packets get assembled. They’re not elves who assemble these things; they’re people. And they’re really nice people who tell funny stories and like to laugh.
Make some new friends. Come to the RHS library on Tuesday, September 7 at 8 a.m. to meet these nice folks and lend a hand at collating and stuffing those envelopes! Parent AND student volunteers are welcome. The more help, the faster the job gets done. Students — bring your volunteer forms and we will sign them. Thanks! First Day Packet Coordinators Kim Henwood and Laura Navarro
High School 101. High School 101 for parents and guardians of new incoming students. On September 14 at 7 p.m. in the Theatre the counseling office will present an introduction to “the successful high school experience.” Come learn how to ease your student’s transition into this large, comprehensive public high school. Hear from several of last year’s freshmen what they wish they had known when they started. Learn from their insights and mistakes how to guide your student. Remember freshman year counts and you want them to “hit the deck running.” Sarah Chapman, Counselor at RHS
First Semester Academic Waivers for Seniors. Seniors Only: If you still need two PE classes or waivers to graduate and are thinking you are eligible for an academic PE waiver first semester because your schedule is full of academic classes, performing arts and/or other graduation requirements, come get a PE Waive form in the counseling office, fill it out completely (including listing your first semester courses on the back side) and turn it in to your counselor No later than September 17, 2010. See your counselor ASAP if you have questions.
First Semester Evening School Registration. If you have core academic classes in which you need to retrieve credit for graduation, first semester registration for Evening School is taking place through September 24, with classes starting October 4. Classes are filled first-come, first-serve, so do not delay seeing your counselor to get a registration form and a copy of your academic history. Classes are held at the old Lincoln High School in Wallingford, the cost is $50.00 for each class and students can take up to two classes. Wendy Krakauer, Head Counselor
Host Families: RHS Foreign Exchange Students. Host families are needed for these kids: A girl from Mexico who loves to play volleyball, tennis, enjoys singing and dancing, reading and spending time with friends; a boy from China who is very outgoing and social, he loves basketball, track and field, and hiking and camping; a boy from Thailand who enjoys cooking and baking, traveling and loves swimming; and a boy from China who loves music, cooking and baking and swimming, his favorite subjects are history, geography and he is taking a Spanish class.
Students come here with good English skills, their own insurance and spending money and a desire to be a member of an American family. Host families do not need to have teenagers of their own; young families as well as empty nesters are excellent high school student hosts this year.

NEWS TO YOU: Previously published stuff or calendar items that are coming soon.
Military Recruitment at Roosevelt High School. Under the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLBA), military recruiters are allowed to come to campus to recruit students. However, under Seattle School District policy, counter-recruiters are also allowed to come to school whenever the military is present (usually once each semester). At Roosevelt, there is a counter military recruiter who comes to campus each time the military is present to give students additional information about military service.
Roosevelt is also required to send student contact information to the military for recruitment purposes, unless a student or parent opts out. In the First Day packet, you will receive a form to opt out of having your students contact information sent to the military. If you do not wish to have your student contacted by the military, fill out the form and return it to the school before October 1. The restriction is good for all four years of high school.
For further information or questions, contact the counter-recruiter who is also a parent of a senior at RHS: Dan Gilman.
