ROOSEVELT JAZZ JOURNEYS CONCERT February 10 at 7:30PM. The internationally renowned Roosevelt High School Jazz Band will be sharing the stage with the award-winning jazz bands from Eckstein and Hamilton Middle Schools. Join us for a wonderful night of music in the beautiful Roosevelt Performing Arts Theatre. $10 donation. Bring a few extra dollars for the delicious bake sale. NATIONAL AFRICAN AMERICAN PARENT INVOLVEMENT DAY Monday, Feb 13 at 6-8:00PM in the RHS Commons The Black Student Union is putting on a celebration for National African American Parent Involvement Day. UW IN HIGH SCHOOL Wednesday, Feb. 15 at 7:00PM, in the RHS Library. New date, due to snow closure: UW in High School....that is correct! Come to our PTSA meeting to hear how your student might earn college credits this spring. Tim Stetter, coordinator for the University of Washington, College in High School program, will make a presentation about the new Language Arts (LA) classes being offered to our students at RHS. These classes will be taught by Roosevelt LA teachers who work closely with the University to develop a rigorous curriculum. The students will be challenged with college level materials in an age appropriate environment; developing their study skills and earning a grade (credit) based on the full semesters work. UW in High School is fee based but cost effective way to earn college credits. Tim will be able to answer your questions about the UW in High School program at our PTSA meeting. Whether you are a parent or a student, this meeting will provide useful information about this opportunity at our school.

WSPTA LEGISLATIVE FOCUS DAY Monday Feb. 20. Noon Rally at the Capitol! We will be in Olympia from 9am-2pm – come join us for any part of the day and remind legislators that K-12 education and kids matter. Students and families make great advocates! Information and registration available on the WSPTA website. Save the date! Sign-up and show-up on February 20 to speak out for kids!

HELP OUR STUDENTS: DONATE TO THE 2012 ROOSEVELT HS ANNUAL FUND CAMPAIGN The Roosevelt HS Annual Fund (previously the "No-Bake" Bake Sale) is our only annual, school-wide fundraiser. Our goal is to keep state and school district budget cuts from eliminating staff at Roosevelt for the 2012 - 2013 school year. Cuts create upheaval and hurt our kids. ROOSEVELT ITALIAN CULTURAL EXCHANGE PROGRAM 2011-12 Planning is underway for Roosevelt’s 3rd cultural exchange trip with Giacomo Floriani High School in Riva del Garda, Italy. Our trip is a 10 day trip, but using only 5 school days. Each trip includes a project taken on by the students -- this year the theme will be green certified LEED buildings. If you or your son/daughter are interested in a program like this please come to a meeting on February 7th at 7:00 PM in Room 107. The exchange has been a great cultural and educational experience for all who have participated. Click here for more information. TRAVEL TO BELIZE THIS SUMMER Travel as a Youth Ambassador with Partners of the Americas, through a program funded by the United States Department of State. VALENTINE'S DAY ROSES AVAILABLE THIS WEEK FROM THE ROOSEVELT JAZZ BAND! Sign-up table will be in the Commons during both lunches all week. For $7 you will get a rose with a personalized card hand-delivered to the recipient of your choice. Buy one for your favorite teacher! Buy one for a special friend! The roses will be delivered during school on Valentine's Day.

DONATE YOUR FORMALWEAR TO THE SOPHOMORE CLASS FUNDRAISER Event date is March 10, 2012, 10am-3pm. Donate Formalwear: Cleaning out closets? Please hold on to any items you’d be willing to donate to the upcoming Dress to Impress sale. We’ll be looking for women’s long and short dresses, purses, pumps, and jewelry, as well as men’s jackets, slacks, ties and dress shoes. GIRLS FAST PITCH SOFTBALL Attention lady Riders who are interested in girls fast pitch softball: the season is fast approaching and we are looking for those interested in playing for the Roosevelt team to attend an informational meeting on Thursday, February 9th at 4:30 pm in the Commons. Anyone interested, regardless of experience, is encouraged to come!

ULTIMATE FRISBEE Informal pre-season practices for boys and girls RHS Ultimate Frisbee Club are underway, Thurs. from 3:15 until dark and Sunday from 10 – 12 noon. For more information you can join the Roosevelt Ultimate Frisbee Facebook page, or contact Ethan at alleykatz18@gmail.com. All levels of player are welcome and more girls are needed! Come find out more about this self-refereeing team sport that encourages fun, fitness, cooperation and team spirit.

GIRLS LACROSSE Captains practices have begun for the Roosevelt Girls Lacrosse Club (RGLC). Captains practices give players new to the sport an opportunity to try it to make sure they want to play a full season. It also gives returning players a chance to get in shape and work on stick skills. Captains practices are Tuesdays and Thursdays right after school for approximately an hour. A signed liability waiver is required to participate. We have a few sticks and eye protection you can borrow if you do not already have your own gear. Meet us by the track after school on Tuesday and/or Thursday, meet a great group of girls, give lacrosse a try, and get in the game! Any questions, contact rglaxc@gmail.com .

BOYS LACROSSE Captains’ Practices are in full swing. Stop by Lower Woodland Field #7 on Mondays, from 3 to 4:30 pm to try the game on for size before committing to the season. We also are working on overall conditioning on Tuesdays and Thursdays, right after school, in the weight room. SUMMER ENRICHMENT SCHOLARSHIPS The Assistance League of Seattle is pleased to offer extracurricular Enrichment Scholarships to students who are currently enrolled in grades 6 through 11 in Seattle Public Schools. Almost any area in which students display a keen interest will be considered but preference will be given to applications for programs in music, art, science, debate, mathematics, language, drama, technology, leadership and journalism. Exceptions not covered by the program include religious studies, sports exclusive camps, foreign study or exchange programs, private lessons or any transportation affiliated with a program. LOOKING FOR PAID EMPLOYMENT? The Ecology youth Corps is looking for youth ages 14-17 to work four weeks this summer, earning $9.04/hour, mostly picking up litter on state highways and in state parks, but also doing some educational activities, and working on recycling. Applications are available in the Counseling Office (see Ms. Johnson). (Applications and references must be RECEIVED by 4/10/12).

Additionally,Barista Program Open Houses will be happening ongoing on the 1st and 3rd Tuesday of every month from now on at the Orion Center, 1828 Yale Avenue. To be eligible, youth must be ages 16-24, homeless or in unstable housing, and be legal to work in the U.S. A flyer with more details is available in the Counseling Office. The eight week program hires students every five weeks, but students cannot apply unless they first attend an Open House.

P.A.S.S. CLASS SECOND SEMESTER CREDIT RETRIEVAL Sophomores, juniors and seniors, do you need to retrieve credit or take a class you missed out on that is required for graduation? The second semester P.A.S.S. class may be the answer to that question. See your counselor right away to talk about what class you need and to get an application. Applications are due to the Counseling Secretary by Thursday 2/16, with about 40-45 spots available. Seniors who need a class to graduate in June will have priority. Other spots will fill up first come, first serve. The class will meet in the Computer labs, Tuesday/Thursday 2:45 p.m.-3:45 p.m. starting 2/28. Roosevelt is subsidizing half of the cost of the class, with the charge to students being $60.00 ($20.00 if ELL or f/r lunch eligible). Don’t wait until the last minute to sing up, because it may be too late. Meet with your counselor and turn in the registration form ASAP. W. Krakauer

Tickets for Senior Prom, Senior Luncheon and Senior SPREE will be on sale during lunchtime at the Concession Stand on the following dates: Feb 7th, 9th & 13th, March 6th, 8th & 13th, April 10th, 11th & 12th. Tickets sold on May 1st & 2nd will be at a higher price. Please note: these events require completed registration forms. You should have recently received a letter in the mail with information about these events and copies of the forms; please go to the Senior Events web page for information about these and other Senior Events (links to the registration forms are on the web page.

Community Meeting: The future of 35th Ave NE Wednesday, Feb 8 at 7PM at the Congregation Beth Shalom Sanctuary (6800 35th Ave NE). Community members from Wedgwood, Ravenna-Bryant, and other nearby neighborhoods are beginning a process to look at the future of 35th Ave NE and develop neighborhood planning tools. On January 11th, we held a public meeting http://wedgwoodcc.org/the-future-of-35th-ave-ne-a-communitys-decision to describe this project to the greater-Wedgwood community.
