IT'S BASIC: EDUCATION FUNDING - DEC. 1, 2008, 7pm JSCEE (3rd & Lander) Seattle How much do schools really cost? And are we preparing our kids for work and college? Washington's education system is up against two big hurdles: Underfunding and inconsistent expectations. By law, the state has to pay for basic expenses; yet it's not covering actual salary costs and it's not keeping up with inflation. Our finance model is broken, and districts statewide are facing severe budget cuts. The state hasn't addressed this issue in 30 years. The good news is the Basic Education Finance Task Force is tackling this. The result of this group's efforts and the outcomes of this upcoming Legislative session will determine whether public schools are on the right track. Come learn more and find out how to make yourself heard in support of public education! Please visit www.seattlecouncilptsa.org/ for more info.
SENIORS, DO NOT WAIT UNTIL THE LAST MINUTE TO GET A COUNSELOR RECOMMENDATION FOR COLLEGE APPLICATIONS Seniors, if you are applying to colleges that require a secondary school report/counselor recommendation or any other paperwork from your counselor, and the application deadline is over the December break (that is, anytime between 12/20 and 1/5), please make an appointment to see your counselor about this NO LATER THAN DECEMBER 3rd! We want to make sure that we have enough lead time to write you a good letter of recommendation.

DUKE ELLINGTON’S JAZZ NUTCRACKER PERFORMED BY THE AWARD-WINNING ROOSEVELT HIGH SCHOOL JAZZ BAND The Roosevelt Jazz Band is proud to present its ninth annual performance of Duke Ellington’s “Jazz Nutcracker,” at the Roosevelt High School Performing Arts Theatre on December 5th at 7:30 pm, December 6th at 7:30 pm and Dec. 7th at 2:00 pm. General Admission $20.00; Seniors $15.00; Students/Youth $10.00. Seating is limited. Purchase tickets on line at www.RooseveltJazz.org or call (206) 420-3931.
Composed toward the end of Ellington’s career, this Nutcracker is an outstanding example of one great composer (Ellington) re-thinking and re-imagining the work of another (Tchaikovsky). Ellington renamed the movements in Tchaikovsky’s Christmas-time classic with jazzy titles such as “Toot Toot Tootie Toot” and “Sugar Rum Cherry.” The Roosevelt Jazz annual Nutcracker concert is a favorite holiday tradition for many Seattleites; don't miss this new take on a classic.
TO THE PARENTS AND FRIENDS OF THE CLASS OF 2009 Start your holidays off right by joining us on Friday, Dec. 5, 6:30 – 10:30 p.m. at the Windermere home of John and Sallie Chaney for “Celebrate!,” our special adults-only evening of food, drinks and conversation to benefit the RHS Class of 2009. Co-hosts are Gregg and Jane Blodgett, Tom Chatriand and Cindy Gustafson and Steve and Gena Sears. Thanks to everyone who has already responded!
We have a wonderful menu planned, complete with hors d’oeuvres, dinner, dessert and drinks, in a festive setting. Bring your spouse, bring a friend, and spread the word—this is a great opportunity to socialize with fellow parents as well as support the senior class. This PTSA-sponsored event is $75 per person.
Your contribution goes towards the expenses of senior class activities, including the Senior Prom, Senior Luncheon and “Spree.” Spree is the substance-free party following graduation, which has been well-attended in the past and is a fun, positive RHS tradition. The total cost of the senior events in 2008 was $73,000, which was subsidized 50% by parent fundraising. The remaining costs were covered by ticket sales and student fundraisers, such as school dances.
For more information about attending this event or making a contribution to the RHS PTSA Class of 2009, please contact Sallie Chaney at salliecchaney@comcast.net. Thank you for your support!
