RHS ENGINEERING BOOSTERS ASPIRE TO CULTIVATE THE ENGINEER IN YOUR CHILD
The Roosevelt High School Engineering Boosters hope to support and promote the Roosevelt Technology and Engineering program. There are many ways you can get involved. Mentors for student project mangers are needed on the 5 class projects, such as a sundial for the school being built in 5th period. Join The Mid-Holiday-Blues Work Party in Room 217 on Monday Dec. 29th, 10am, to clean up and organize the prototyping room OR contribute your own special expertise. Everyone is welcome! Questions? Contact Karl Ruff by e-mail at kwruff@seattleschools.org or by phone at 206 – 252 – 4847.
ARE YOU A PROJECT MANAGER?
The Engineering program needs adult project managers to mentor student project mangers. You only need to contribute a few hours to make a HUGE difference in these student's projects. Engineering Teacher, Karl Ruff and his students are producing five year long projects: a feedback arm, a dirigible, a wind tunnel, a sun dial and a vacuum forming machine. Each project needs one or more mentors to help these students and their projects reach their full potential. Please contact Karl Ruff by e-mail at kwruff@seattleschools.org or by phone at 206 – 252 – 4847.
ROOSEVELT SCIENCE BOOSTERS PRESENT A “SCIENCE IN SOCIETY” evening talk by Dr. Samuel K. Wasser from the Department of Biology, University of Washington, speaking on: "Using DNA forensics to track the illegal trade in African elephant ivory".
Date: Wednesday December 10 at 7:30 pm in the Roosevelt HS Auditorium
Dr. Samuel K. Wasser obtained his B.Sc in Zoology at Michigan State University, his M.Sc in Zoology at University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, and his Ph.D in Animal Behavior at the University of Washington. He has been awarded the first H.F.Guggenheim Career Development Award and the first Research Scientist Development Award from the Smithsonian Institution. He has served as the Scientific Director of the Center for Wildlife Conservation at the Woodland Park Zoo, and is now the Director of the Center for Conservation Biology at the UW Biology Department.
His lab specializes in the development and application of noninvasive tools for monitoring wildlife over large landscape areas, and they developed methods of acquiring animal DNA. They also developed methods to determine the geographic origin of poached African elephant ivory by extracting the DNA and matching it to their monitoring maps. Currently, his lab is working with the Interpol Working Group on Wildlife Crime to investigate the origins of all major ivory seizures in the recent past.
