HAPPY HOLIDAY'S TO ALL!
We are giving ourselves the gift, this month, of a few extra hours and will not hold a December PTSA meeting. Our next PTSA meeting will be Wednesday, January 21st at 7pm in the RHS Library. Enjoy your time with your family and we look forward to seeing you all in the New Year.

SPECIAL ED PARENT MEETINGS WITH CAO ON CLOSURE CHANGES
From Seattle Public Schools
As you are aware the District has announced preliminary recommendations on district-wide capacity management and building closures. We recognize that the topic of potential school closure is always an emotional one fraught with concerns about where will my child be placed next year if my school closes? It is especially concerning when dealing with students that have more significant disabilities.
Superintendent, Dr. Goodloe-Johnson, wants parents to understand that "We are considering building closures in order to strengthen academic programs and protect the District's long-term financial health." She recognizes and has said "these are very difficult decisions to make, but they are decisions we must face now, and we must face them together, as a community."
The District is committed to using this opportunity to strengthen and expand services for special education students consistent with recommendations from the "Special Education: Organization, Program and Service Delivery Review" and recommendations identified by the Special Education Advisory Committee (SEAAC) and supported by the Special Education PTSA Committee. The Review document can be found on the Special Education Department's District Website.
We would like to invite you to attend a meeting to update you on preliminary relocation of special education services currently housed at each of the schools identified for closure and give you an opportunity to provide input as to considerations, concerns and suggestions that need to be addressed as relocations are identified and finalized.
The meeting is scheduled for:
Monday, December 15, 2008 9:30-11:30 AM; Room 2765, John Stanford Center for Educational Excellence
Again, the purpose of this meeting is to provide an opportunity for parents to hear current information regarding preliminary activities connected with relocation of services and for Seattle Public Schools to listen to your concerns and ideas.

"A CHILD'S CHRISTMAS IN WALES"
One of the most enduring, yet often forgotten Christmas memoirs, Dylan Thomas’s "A Child’s Christmas in Wales" comes to life at Stone Soup Theatre. "A Child’s Christmas in Wales" recreates the nostalgic magic of Dylan Thomas’ childhood Christmas when everything was brighter, better and more alive. However, what Dylan comes to realize is that the experience of Christmas doesn’t change with time, but holds a place in our hearts that nothing else can fill. Performers include our youth conservatory students and professional adult actors. Come watch Dylan recreate Christmas at Stone Soup with live classic Welsh instrumentation and vocals that bring us right back in time.

PLEASE SUPPORT KARINA LOPEZ AND HER FAMILY
We are asking for your help for Roosevelt student, Karina Lopez, and her family. Karina's mother, Noemi Lopez, was murdered a week ago, allegedly by her ex-husband who has since fled. Karina and her two younger siblings are now in the care of a family member.
A benevolent account has been set up at Washington Mutual in the name of Noemi Lopez. You can stop by any Washington Mutual location to give a donation. As well, there is also a Paypal account open for donations set up by a neighbor of Ms. Lopez's who is the editor of the Rainier Valley Post (the link is at the top and to the right).
Please consider a $5 or $10 donation or more if possible. These siblings have been effectively orphaned and need to know that they have the support of their school communities.
Thank you,
Melissa Westbrook and Maureen Dahlstrom

RHS ENGINEERING BOOSTERS ASPIRE TO CULTIVATE THE ENGINEER IN YOUR CHILD
The Roosevelt High School Engineering Boosters hope to support and promote the Roosevelt Technology and Engineering program. There are many ways you can get involved. Mentors for student project mangers are needed on the 5 class projects, such as a sundial for the school being built in 5th period. Join The Mid-Holiday-Blues Work Party in Room 217 on Monday Dec. 29th, 10am, to clean up and organize the prototyping room OR contribute your own special expertise. Everyone is welcome! Questions? Contact Karl Ruff by e-mail at kwruff@seattleschools.org or by phone at 206 – 252 – 4847.
ARE YOU A PROJECT MANAGER?
The Engineering program needs adult project managers to mentor student project mangers. You only need to contribute a few hours to make a HUGE difference in these student's projects. Engineering Teacher, Karl Ruff and his students are producing five year long projects: a feedback arm, a dirigible, a wind tunnel, a sun dial and a vacuum forming machine. Each project needs one or more mentors to help these students and their projects reach their full potential. Please contact Karl Ruff by e-mail at kwruff@seattleschools.org or by phone at 206 – 252 – 4847.
